What Insurance Does a Sporting Organisation Need?

Sports organisations face a unique combination of risks — physical injury, legal liability, property damage, governance disputes, and data breaches — that standard business insurance often does not address adequately. Below are the key covers we arrange for sporting clubs, associations, coaches, and event organisers.

Public liability insurance protects your sporting club or association against claims of injury or property damage caused to third parties — including spectators, visiting teams, officials, and members of the public. If a spectator is injured on your clubhouse steps, a visiting player trips on uneven ground, or a ball damages a neighbouring property, public liability responds to the legal costs and compensation.

Essential for all sporting clubs, associations, and event organisers. Required by most councils and sporting governing bodies as a condition of ground permits.

Professional indemnity insurance protects coaches, trainers, sports therapists, and sporting organisations against claims arising from professional advice or services. If a coaching technique causes injury, a training program leads to a member's adverse health outcome, or a sports therapist is sued for negligent treatment, professional indemnity covers legal defence costs and damages.

Required for all qualified coaches, personal trainers, sports therapists, and organisations providing formal coaching programs. Often required by governing bodies as part of accreditation.

Personal accident insurance provides financial protection to members and volunteers if they are injured during club activities — covering medical expenses, income replacement if they cannot work, and lump sum benefits for serious injuries. Unlike workers compensation, personal accident cover can extend to volunteers and non-employed members who are not covered by the employer's scheme.

Critical for clubs with volunteer committees, volunteer coaches, and active members. Workers compensation does not cover volunteers — personal accident fills this gap.

If your sporting club owns or leases a clubhouse, grandstand, pavilion, storage shed, or other premises, property insurance protects those assets against fire, storm, flood, theft, and accidental damage. This extends to contents including furniture, kitchen equipment, bar stock, audio-visual equipment, and sporting memorabilia.

Replacement value — not market value — is required. Ensure your sum insured reflects the actual cost to rebuild or replace, not the property's market worth.

Management liability insurance protects the committee members, directors, and officers of your sporting club or association against claims of mismanagement, wrongful decisions, employment disputes, workplace harassment, and financial mismanagement. Committee members of incorporated sporting associations are personally exposed — their personal assets can be at risk without this cover.

Often the most overlooked cover for sporting clubs. Committee members act as directors of an incorporated association and carry the same legal exposures. This is where an experienced broker earns their value.

Sporting clubs and associations collect significant amounts of member data — names, dates of birth, contact details, payment information, and health records. If your club processes online registrations, membership renewals, or canteen payments, a cyber breach can expose you to significant regulatory penalties and reputational damage. Cyber insurance covers the costs of responding to a breach, notifying members, and managing legal claims.

Clubs using online registration platforms, payment portals, or storing member health data are particularly exposed. The Privacy Act applies to organisations with turnover above $3M — and to some sports organisations regardless of size.

Event Cancellation Insurance

If your club runs tournaments, carnivals, fundraising events, or annual competitions, event cancellation insurance covers the financial loss if the event cannot proceed due to an insured event — such as severe weather, venue damage, or key participant unavailability. This covers pre-paid costs, lost revenue, and cancellation expenses.

Particularly relevant for clubs that run signature events with significant pre-paid costs — venue hire, catering, equipment hire, entertainment. A single cancelled event can leave a club significantly out of pocket.

Equipment & Contents Insurance

Sporting clubs accumulate significant assets — training equipment, scoreboards, gym equipment, machinery, canteen equipment, trophies, merchandise, and specialist sporting gear. Equipment and contents insurance covers loss or damage to these assets from fire, theft, storm, and accidental damage.

Many clubs significantly underestimate the replacement value of their equipment. We recommend a full asset register when arranging this cover to ensure you are not underinsured at claim time.

If your club owns or operates vehicles — including minibuses, vans, trailers, or ride-on mowers — fleet insurance protects those assets and the people driving them. This is particularly relevant for clubs that transport teams to away games, run community transport programs, or use vehicles for groundskeeping.

Club vehicles used to transport members require appropriate commercial fleet cover — standard private vehicle insurance typically excludes club transport use. See our Fleet Insurance page for more.

If your sporting club employs paid staff — including coaches, administrators, canteen staff, or groundskeepers — workers compensation insurance is a legal requirement in every Australian state and territory. It covers medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, and lost wages for employees injured at work.

Workers compensation is compulsory for all paid employees. Obligations vary by state — Morgan Insurance Brokers can advise on the requirements in your jurisdiction.

Travel Insurance — Team & Squad Travel

For clubs whose teams travel interstate or internationally for competitions, team travel insurance covers medical expenses, trip cancellation, lost equipment, and emergency assistance. Standard personal travel insurance policies are often not appropriate for organised sporting travel — specialist sports travel cover accounts for the physical activity involved.

Standard travel insurance may exclude injuries sustained during organised sporting competition. Ensure your team travel policy specifically covers the sports and activities involved.

Is Your Club Properly Protected?

7 common gaps

Many sporting clubs carry significant insurance gaps without realising it. Here are the situations where we most commonly find clubs exposed.

  • Volunteer committee members are personally exposed to legal action. Management liability is not in place.

    Gap
  • Member data is collected online but there is no cyber insurance in place.

    Gap
  • Your personal accident policy excludes volunteers, covering only paid staff. Personal accident insurance fills this gap.

    Gap
  • Your club vehicle is insured on a private policy that excludes club transport use. Fleet insurance is required.

    Gap
  • Running an annual tournament with significant pre-paid costs but no event cancellation cover in place.

    Gap
  • Equipment sum insured has not been reviewed in years. Your club may be significantly underinsured at replacement value.

    Gap
  • A coach is providing formal coaching programs without professional indemnity insurance in place.

Common questions

Sports insurance FAQs

The questions we are most commonly asked by sporting clubs, associations, and coaches when arranging insurance for the first time or reviewing their existing cover.

Is sports insurance compulsory for Australian sporting clubs?

Sports insurance is not universally compulsory by law, but it is effectively required in practice for most clubs. Local councils require proof of current public liability insurance before granting ground permits and facility access. Most state and national sporting governing bodies also require affiliated clubs to hold minimum insurance levels as a condition of affiliation and competition eligibility.

Workers compensation insurance is compulsory under law in every Australian state and territory if your club employs any paid staff — including part-time coaches, administrators, or canteen workers. If your club has no paid employees, workers compensation is not required, but personal accident cover for volunteers is strongly recommended as an alternative.

Does my governing body's insurance cover my club — or do I need a separate policy?

Many national and state sporting bodies arrange group insurance schemes that provide base-level cover to affiliated clubs as part of the affiliation fee. This commonly includes public liability and basic personal accident cover. However, governing body schemes rarely cover everything your club needs.

Common gaps in governing body schemes include management liability for committee members, property and contents cover for clubhouses and equipment, cyber insurance, event cancellation for independently run club events, and cover for activities outside the scope of the governing body's program. A broker reviews your governing body's policy schedule and identifies exactly what is and is not covered before recommending any additional cover — so you do not pay twice for the same protection or carry gaps you do not know about.

Check your governing body's policy schedule first. Bring it to your broker review and we will map what is covered, what is excluded, and what needs a separate policy.
Are volunteers covered under sports insurance?

This is one of the most important and most misunderstood aspects of sports club insurance. Workers compensation does not cover volunteers — it only applies to paid employees. Volunteers injured while carrying out club activities are not covered by workers compensation regardless of how long they have volunteered or how integral they are to club operations.

Personal accident insurance is the correct cover for volunteers. It provides medical expense reimbursement, income replacement for volunteers who cannot work as a result of an injury sustained during club activities, and lump sum benefits for serious injuries. Most sporting clubs with active volunteer committees, volunteer coaches, and volunteer scorers or officials need personal accident cover that specifically extends to volunteers — not all policies do this automatically.

Are committee members personally liable if something goes wrong at the club?

Yes — and this is one of the most overlooked risks in community sport. Committee members of incorporated sporting associations act as directors of the association and carry personal legal exposure for decisions made in that capacity. Without management liability insurance, committee members' personal assets can be at risk from claims of mismanagement, wrongful termination of staff or coaches, workplace harassment or discrimination, financial mismanagement, or breach of their statutory duties as officers of an incorporated body.

This applies to volunteer committee members just as much as paid directors. A well-meaning treasurer or president who makes a decision that leads to a legal claim against the association can be personally named in that claim if the association does not have management liability insurance in place. See our management liability insurance page for more detail on what this cover protects.

Does public liability cover member injuries during training and games?

No — and this distinction is critical. Public liability insurance protects the club against claims from third parties — spectators, visitors, neighbouring property owners, or people who are injured or suffer property damage as a result of the club's negligence. It is not designed to compensate members for injuries sustained during normal participation in the sport.

Member injuries during training and competition are covered by personal accident insurance, which is a separate policy. A player who breaks a leg during a match, a coach who is injured during a training session, or a swimmer who suffers a shoulder injury during squad training would claim on personal accident — not public liability. Both covers serve different purposes and most clubs need both.

How much does sports club insurance cost in Australia?

Cost varies significantly depending on the sport, membership size, club activities, whether the club owns property, and whether paid staff are employed. As a general guide:

Small community clubs with public liability only and no owned property typically pay between $400 and $1,500 per year depending on the sport and risk profile. Contact sports (rugby, AFL, boxing, martial arts) attract higher premiums than lower-contact sports. Clubs with owned clubhouses, significant equipment, or licensed bars pay materially more once property, contents, and liquor liability are factored in. Management liability and cyber insurance are additional costs on top of the base covers.

The most accurate way to get a cost figure is to have a broker compare quotes across their specialist sports insurer panel based on your club's specific profile — size, sport, activities, facilities, and staff. A broker can often find a lower combined premium by packaging covers together than buying each policy separately.

Does our club need insurance for visiting teams and guest players?

Your club's public liability policy covers claims arising from your club's negligence — including incidents involving visiting teams, guest players, and officials at your ground or facility. If a visiting player is injured because of a hazard at your venue that your club was responsible for maintaining, your public liability responds.

However, visiting players are not automatically covered by your personal accident policy for injuries they sustain during the game itself. Personal accident policies typically cover registered members and, in some cases, registered volunteers. Guest and visiting players may fall outside the scope of your policy's member definition. Check your policy's definition of "insured persons" and, if visiting teams are a regular part of your fixture list, confirm whether temporary extensions for guest players are available under your policy.

Do we need separate insurance for events and tournaments we run independently?

It depends on the scope of the event and what your existing policy covers. Most ongoing club policies cover regular training sessions, home fixtures, and club-run activities within the scope of normal club operations. Large-scale tournaments, carnivals, fundraising events, and community sporting events may fall outside your standard policy scope and require a separate event insurance policy or a specific endorsement to your existing cover.

Key questions to ask before running an independent event: Does your current policy cover the activity type and participant numbers? Does it cover non-member spectators and the general public? Is event cancellation cover in place if the event is called off due to weather, venue damage, or key participant unavailability? A broker can review your current policy against the event profile and advise whether additional event cover is needed before the event takes place.

Does our club need cyber insurance?

If your club collects member data online, processes payments digitally, or stores health or personal information about members, cyber insurance is worth considering. Sporting clubs collect significant amounts of sensitive member data — names, dates of birth, contact details, payment information, and in some sports, health and injury records.

The Privacy Act 1988 applies to organisations with annual turnover above $3 million, but some sporting organisations fall under the Act regardless of turnover due to the nature of the data they handle. A cyber breach can result in regulatory penalties, notification costs, legal claims from affected members, and reputational damage. Cyber insurance covers the costs of responding to a breach, member notification, forensic investigation, and managing any resulting legal claims. Clubs using online registration platforms, EFTPOS, or storing member health data are particularly exposed. See our cyber insurance page for more.
