A broker who reads the contract, not a call centre that reads a script
Canberra insurance is mostly about meeting someone else's requirements — a department's, a landlord's, a head contractor's. That's a very different job from selling a policy, and it's the one we're set up for.

We work from your tender schedule or lease Send us the document. We tell you what's mandatory, what's negotiable, and place cover that passes the procurement check the first time.

✓
Workers comp is part of the program, not a referral Because the ACT scheme is privately underwritten, we quote it, compare it and place it alongside your liability and business cover — including when your team straddles the NSW border.

✓
One broker, start to finish The person who quotes your cover is the one who renews it and handles your claims. No account handover, no ticketing system.

✓
Same-day certificates, no office visit Everything runs over phone, email and video from our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane offices — which is how most ACT clients want it when a certificate is due tomorrow.

Insurance brokers Canberra — servicing the ACT and Capital Region
Insurance for the way Canberra businesses actually operate
Canberra runs on contracts. Whether you're delivering to a Commonwealth department, building in Molonglo, or running a café in Braddon, someone has handed you a schedule of insurances they expect you to hold. Here's how those conversations usually go, and what we put in place.
You've hired your first staff member in the ACT and need workers compensation
This is the one that catches people out when they move from interstate. Unlike NSW or Queensland, the ACT doesn't run a government scheme for most private employers — workers compensation in the ACT is placed with an approved private insurer, which means it can be compared and negotiated like any other policy. We arrange it as part of your overall program, so your wages declaration, your public liability and your business pack all line up, and you're not double-covered or, worse, uninsured for a category of worker.
The grey areas are contractors, labour-hire and directors. If you're not sure whether someone counts as a "worker" under the ACT legislation, or whether you as a director are covered at all, we'll walk through it with you before you're audited rather than after. Sole traders and partners who can't insure themselves under the scheme usually pair it with income protection or personal accident cover instead.
You're tendering for government work and the schedule of insurances is three pages long
Commonwealth and ACT Government contracts, and the panels that feed them, are specific about what they want to see: professional indemnity at a set limit, public liability usually at $10 million or $20 million, and increasingly cyber cover if you'll touch departmental data. We read the schedule, tell you what's mandatory versus what's negotiable, and place cover that will pass the procurement check the first time, with certificates of currency issued in the format the department asks for.
For consultancies, IT providers and engineering firms with a few directors, we'll also flag whether management liability belongs in the same program — it's often cheaper to add it now than when a client asks for it mid-contract.
You're a builder or tradie working across Canberra and Queanbeyan
Canberra's construction pipeline is steady and a lot of it is government-adjacent, so head contractors want the same paperwork the departments do. We'll set up public liability at the contract limit, contract works where you're responsible for the build, and cover for your tools and plant and equipment. If you're working both sides of the border, we'll make sure the policy responds in NSW as well as the ACT, and that your workers compensation arrangements match where your people are actually employed.
For a one- or two-van operation, a tradies package usually does all of this in a single policy.
You run a shop, café or professional office in Civic, Braddon, Kingston or Woden
Canberra commercial leases tend to follow the same template: a minimum public liability limit, glass and contents, and often business interruption. Rather than buying each piece separately, we build a business insurance package around the lease so the landlord's requirements are met on day one. Hospitality operators get the extras that matter in this city — cover for a long shutdown, spoilage, and liquor liability where it applies.
If you own the premises rather than lease them, or hold Canberra investment property, we also arrange commercial property and landlord insurance, with rent default cover that reflects the ACT's tenancy rules.

Questions Canberra businesses ask before they sign a contract
Most of what we're asked in the ACT comes back to a tender schedule, a lease or a workers compensation letter. These are the questions that come up most, with straight answers. If yours isn't here, call 1300 109 778 and ask a broker directly.
No — our offices are in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, and we look after Canberra clients by phone, email and video from start to finish, including claims. In practice that's how most ACT businesses prefer to deal with us anyway: certificates of currency, tender schedules and renewals all move faster over email than across a desk. If you'd rather meet a broker in person, our Sydney team can arrange it.
Yes, and this is where the ACT differs from most of the country. Rather than a government scheme like icare or WorkCover, workers compensation in the ACT is placed with an approved private insurer, which means we can quote it, compare insurers and place it alongside the rest of your program. It's compulsory as soon as you employ someone, and the definition of "worker" can capture some contractors and labour-hire arrangements. If you're not sure whether you're covered as a director or a sole trader, our guide on whether directors are covered under workers compensation is a good starting point.
Almost every tender schedule we see asks for the same core: professional indemnity at a stated limit, public liability (usually $10 million or $20 million), and workers compensation. If you'll be handling departmental data, cyber insurance is increasingly on the list too. Send us the schedule before you respond; we'll tell you what's mandatory, what's negotiable, and issue certificates in the format the department wants so you're not chasing paperwork at the deadline.
It can. Public liability and business insurance follow you across the border without any fuss. Workers compensation doesn't: the ACT and NSW run separate schemes, so where your people are actually employed and working determines which one applies, and some businesses need both. We'll look at how your team is split and set it up so nobody falls between the two systems.
Usually public liability at the limit your head contractor specifies, contract works insurance if you're responsible for the build, and cover for your tools and plant. Because a lot of Canberra construction is government-adjacent, head contractors tend to want the same paperwork the departments do, so it pays to have it ready. For smaller operations a tradies package usually bundles all of this into one policy.
Professional indemnity is the non-negotiable, and clients will usually specify the limit. Beyond that we normally look at public liability for the office and site visits, management liability if there are directors and employees, and cyber cover. Firms working in defence, security or health tend to have extra contractual requirements, which is why we read the contract rather than quoting from a checklist. Our IT insurance page covers the common combinations.
Most Canberra commercial leases specify a minimum public liability limit and often want glass, contents and business interruption noted as well. We build a business insurance package around the lease wording so the landlord's requirements are met on day one, and for hospitality operators we add the covers that matter here — spoilage, a long shutdown, and liquor liability where it applies.
Yes. A lot of our Canberra clients are public servants or contractors who want income protection reviewed alongside what their super fund already provides, and we can quote life, TPD and trauma cover at the same time. On the property side we arrange home and contents, landlord insurance for investment properties, and strata insurance for ACT unit plans.
You call us, not the insurer. We lodge the claim, deal with the assessor and the insurer's questions, and push it through to settlement. Because we placed the policy, we know what it covers and can argue the point if the insurer's first response isn't right. There's no extra charge for this — it's part of what you get for using a broker.
Cover that passes the tender check first time.
Send us the schedule of insurances, the lease, or the workers compensation letter and we'll tell you exactly what you need — and what you don't. We compare cover across a wide panel of Australian insurers, place ACT workers compensation alongside the rest of your program, and issue certificates in the format departments and head contractors ask for. All by phone, email and video, no office visit required.
