Why restaurants need specialist insurance
Restaurants aren’t like most businesses. You’ve got open flames, commercial equipment running at full capacity, a constant flow of customers, staff working in a high-pressure environment, and often a liquor licence on top of it all.
A standard business insurance policy isn’t built for that and the gaps only become obvious when something goes wrong.
That’s why we structure restaurant insurance specifically around how your venue operates, not a generic policy pulled off the shelf.
Kitchen fires & property damage
Can shut you down for weeks. Cover pays for repairs and lost income.
Customer injury claims
Legal costs alone can run into six figures. Public liability covers your defence.
Lease & landlord requirements
Most commercial leases require minimum public liability cover to operate.
Equipment breakdown & food spoilage
A fridge failure overnight can wipe out thousands in stock before anyone notices.

Examples of How Lauren Helps Her Restaurant Owners
When your equipment fails on a Friday night
One of my restaurant clients called me in a panic their commercial oven had died mid-service on a Friday evening. No backup and a weekend of bookings on the line. I got straight on the phone with local technicians frantically texting and calling whoever would respond to get a technician on site by Saturday morning. Then I lodged the claim on the weekend with the insurer, and first thing on Monday calling the insurer to expedite the payment. The repair was covered in full and they were back up and running with minimal downtime. That’s the difference between having a broker who picks up the phone and one who sends you a form.
When a customer makes an injury claim against you
A client of mine had a guest slip and fall in their restaurant and lodge a personal injury claim against the business. For any restaurant owner, that’s one of the most stressful things that can happen, the fear of what it might cost, the legal letters, not knowing what to say or do. I stepped in immediately, liaised directly with the insurer and their legal team, and made sure my client didn’t have to deal with any of it alone. They were kept informed at every stage, and the claim was handled fairly and efficiently. They never had to pay a cent out of pocket.
When a storm hit and the fit-out was damaged
After severe storms caused significant damage to a restaurant client’s premises fit-out, signage, and part of the kitchen. I coordinated the entire claims process from start to finish. That included organising the trades to assess and repair the damage, managing insurer approvals, and making sure nothing fell through the cracks. My client’s only job was to keep the business going while I handled everything behind the scenes.
When the power went out and stock was at risk
A restaurant client lost power unexpectedly during storm season and had thousands of dollars of refrigerated stock at risk. I arranged refrigerated transport to get the stock moved and preserved while the power issue was resolved and then made sure the claim for the costs involved was lodged and paid promptly.
When renewal comes around
Every year I review my restaurant clients’ policies before renewal to make sure they’re still getting the best value on the market. In a number of cases I’ve been able to go back to the market and secure savings of up to 20% on premiums without reducing cover. For a busy restaurant already managing tight margins, that’s real money back in the business.

FAQ's
Public Liability is usually a mandatory requirement as part of your commercial lease agreement, however, it is not legally mandatory. Public Liability Insurance is designed to protect businesses against claims made by members of the public for personal injury or property damage resulting from the business’s negligent activities.
Yes, food poisoning claims are typically covered under the public liability section of a restaurant insurance policy. If a customer becomes ill as a result of food served at your restaurant and makes a claim against you, public liability insurance covers your legal defence costs and any compensation awarded. It’s important that your policy is structured correctly and that food preparation is properly declared.
Restaurant insurance costs vary significantly depending on how your venue operates. Key factors include your location, annual turnover, whether you hold a liquor licence, the size of your kitchen setup, your claims history, and how many staff you employ. A small takeaway or food truck will sit at the lower end of the range, while a licensed full-service restaurant with a large dining room and commercial kitchen will pay considerably more.
The core covers most restaurants should have in place are public liability, property damage, and business interruption. For a detailed breakdown of what affects your premium and what you can expect to pay, read our guide to how much restaurant insurance costs in Australia.
Rather than quoting a figure that may not reflect your venue, the most useful thing we can do is go to market on your behalf and find out exactly what cover costs for your specific situation, in most cases we can turn that around the same day.
Standard property insurance typically doesn’t cover spoilage. However, Machinery Breakdown Insurance can include optional coverage for the deterioration of stock due to machinery breakdown, helping businesses mitigate losses from spoiled goods. This cover ensures that if your refrigeration fails, you’re not left covering the full cost of lost stock.
